Sinners is rich, soulful, and sexy without being overpowering that stars Michael B Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O’ Connell, Delroy Lindo, Omar Benson, and Miles Canon. Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners marks the fifth time that he was worked with Michael B Jordan. Their previous projects include Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, all of which have ranked as “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. The film occurs over 24 hours and follows the tale of two twin brothers who return home to open a Juke Joint only to find that their home has been overrun with vampires. Jack O’ Connor steps into the complex antagonist role, this time with fangs, as Remmick; an Irish vampire that’s been around a mighty long time.
Michael B Jordan stuns as he plays both twins Stack and Smoke in Sinners. Stack, whose love interest is Mary played by Hailee Steinfeld, is the side of the coin with no nonsense. While Smoke, whose love interest is Wunmi Mosaku, is the other side of the coin who rarely takes anything seriously. Jordan plays the twins in such a way that it appears that he is two different people. The mannerisms, gait, and accents are 100% different depending on what twin he is portraying. Michael can transition between the Smokestack brothers seamlessly as if he had himself cloned.
Miles Canon who portrays Preacher Boy, the twin’s cousin who likes to spend his free time with his guitar, has the voice of an angel that truly has the power to reach across realms. This is Miles’s first acting role. He graces viewers with his musical talent and he’s a natural on screen.
With that being said, it is important to note that the music itself is a character within Sinners that flows from blues to Irish folk music, and it works well together. An original score composed by Ludwig Göransson, the fourth collaboration with Coogler, is a perfect addition to this original piece.
While Sinners focuses on the Smokestack twins, Coogler has the amazing ability to integrate different cultures so that they all serve a purpose in the film with each culture being appreciated at the same time. The Choctaw Nation is highlighted in the beginning of the film and serve a warning about what is to come. It may not be common knowledge, but the Choctaw Nation does have a rich history in Mississippi and Oklahoma so their presence in the film is strongly warranted. Chinese Americans are heavily featured throughout which is an ode to Chinese immigrants, mainly laborers, that were present in the Mississippi Delta during the period where Sinners takes place.
While it does not take place on screen, the rival between Italian and Irish immigrants plays an important role in how the Smokestack twins were able to accomplish so much and return home profitable.
Jack O’ Connell’s Remmick who serves as one of the antagonists also has Irish origins with a long lineage and a strong connection to the people of Ireland and its land. With the use of traditional Irish music and dance as well as the oppression parallels, the Irish representation remains at the forefront from the very first time we are introduced to this complex villain.
Spoilers will not be mentioned however there are two post credits scenes. With the demand for original content and the love for cinematic universes in today’s day and age, it is easy for viewers to leave their screening wanting more. While Sinners leaves you satisfied, the question remains… is there more to come? This film has been extremely successful, to the surprise and shock to some media outlets. With that being said, retract your fangs. As Sinners continues to break box office records Ryan Coogler has expressed no interest in making a sequel.
Do not fret! If you did not have a chance to see the film in the IMAX 70 mm format, it is being released to IMAX theaters in 70mm from May 15th to May 21st for your first, second, or in some cases, third or fourth viewing.
